I'm raising money for an area of greatest need

I've created this page because I want to make a difference.

I'm inspired by the work that the Children’s Hospital Foundation do, so I wanted to raise money for them as part of my participation in 42k Your Way.

Please help me help them by giving whatever you can using the 'donate' button. The more people that know about the Children’s Hospital Foundation, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family.

Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!

My Updates

Arlia’s story

I am raising awareness and funds for the Children's Hospital Foundation by completing 42k in the month of August because the staff and advanced machines saved my daughter, Arlia's, life.

My pregnancy was amazing apart from the overeating on the vegemite scrolls, thanks Hannah.
I went into labor spontaneously and labored for 18 hours. Everything was perfect however, little to my knowledge, in the last 10 minutes things were changing. Arlia ended up inhaling meconium so severely that she was white and limp and required 100% oxygen. I didn't know what was happening and no one could really tell us but I remember them taking Arlia away before I even go to look at her properly. Arlia was taken to the Intensive Care Unit with several doctors, specialists and nurses trying to get Arlia stable. We were told Arlia needed to be transported by helicopter or ambulance to the Mater hospital as they specialize more in this area. I was unable to be with Arlia so Nate went with her and stayed by her side.

The next day I was able to be transferred to the Mater to be with Arlia and whilst be transported there, I received a call from the doctors and Nate. The doctor said that the Mater cannot provide Arlia with any more support to stay stable and therefore, Arlia needed to be transported to the Children's Hospital to go on a machine called ECMO (lung bypass). The doctor then said words that I will never forget, "if Arlia does not go on this machine today, she is going to pass away by this afternoon". There were lots of risks with this machine because they would need to take the blood out of Arlia's body, put it through this machine to oxygenate it, and then put that blood back in. There were also risks of this machine causing brain damage but we immediately said yes.

I was able to be with Arlia and Nate that afternoon. Arlia had a tube through her jugular going into her heart and was completely paralyzed and sedated. We were told the 'normal' amount of time for this machine is 3-5 days but Arlia will need 7-10. Arlia was called the miracle baby in the ward because she improved every single day. Arlia was taken off this machine in 3 days and defeated all odds. Don't get me wrong, there were lots of ups and downs including her lung collapsing, etc but her ups outweighed the downs for sure.  Arlia had tubes and cords coming out of everywhere which was very scary to see but we got to hold Arlia on day 5!

The Children's Hospital organized for Nate and I to stay at the Ronald McDonald house so that we could be by Arlia's bedside every day. That made things so much easier for us.

We eventually got transferred back to the Sunshine Coast hospital and stayed there for another week.

Arlia is off oxygen tanks now and is meeting all milestones perfectly. Arlia did not get brain damage at all and there is no lasting complications for Arlia. Arlia is now a healthy, happy and normal baby. Arlia is a super cheeky bubba and giggles and squeals all the time!

I am very thankful for the Children's Hospital. They staff sat with me, cried with me, hugged me throughout all of our stay in this hospital. They absolutely saved Arlia's life and are the reason I get to be a mum to this day.

If it wasn’t for the children’s hospital and the ECMO machine, I wouldn’t have my baby girl. Every time that thought crosses my mind, I can’t help but just become an emotional mess. I’m so beyond grateful and therefore I will do anything to show my appreciation and support.
